The Chronic respiratory conditions webpage provides high-level information on the prevalence of various chronic respiratory conditions including asthma, COPD, hay fever and bronchiectasis. Chronic respiratory conditions are very common, affecting 7.1 million Australians. Respiratory conditions are believed to be the most commonly managed problems in general practice. In 2013, there were 12,465 deaths where the underlying cause was a respiratory condition (acute or chronic ). Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of death in Australia and internationally, and asthma death rates in Australia are high in comparison with many other countries.
