For individuals who are not situated at academic institutions, obtaining research grants can be a confusing process. This is especially so for those without an extensive research background. However, there are a number of avenues to obtain smaller health care research grants armed simply with a good research question and investigation plan.
Funding Databases
Community of Science is an international database which covers over $33 billion worth of funding. This covers funding for research, collaborations, through to capital or operating expenses. The Commonwealth Fund is similarly international, with a majority of US-focused grants, though with a significant number specified for Australia.
Government Departments
Small grants, generally with a focus on community development and healthy lifestyles are distributed by state and territory Governments. The New South Wales Office for Science and Medical Research financially supports innovative areas of scientific research. The Victorian Government manages a community grants program for individuals wishing to engage in community development research.
Not-for-Profit Organisations and Professional Bodies
Peak advocacy and not-for-profit groups often provide small grants for research in their area of strategic focus. Alzheimer’s Australia and Rotary Australia are currently providing grants of up to $40,000 for research projects. The Australian Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), and the Primary Health Care Research, Evaluation and Development (PHCRED) strategy also manage a significant number of grants with the intention of building research capacity.
Professional registration bodies and associations will likewise offer funding within their professional discipline, such as the Royal Australian College of General Practice (RACGP) and the Australian College of Regional and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).
