Editorial: The ‘wow’ factor in research

     Ellen McIntyre, PHC RIS

While easy to recognise, the ‘wow’ factor is not easy to describe. A research conference is where research’s ‘wow’ factor is often most visible. It is the place where the sharing of information brings together ideas, excitement and the beginnings of collaborations. Many researchers will present research they have spent months, if not years completing – and it’s the passion of these presenters that contributes to the ‘wow’ factor. The ‘wow’ factor drives the enthusiastic discussion following a presentation and the stimulating conversations during the breaks, over drinks and at the conference dinner. Posters are in a unique position to enhance the ‘wow’ factor with their colourful display of key findings.

With the General Practice & Primary Health Care Research Conference Driving Change only a few weeks away, the program makes for one very exciting event. All 320 plus abstracts have been peer reviewed and those deemed suitable have been allocated to workshops, symposia, papers and posters.

Many meetings have been organised around the formal program, such that there will be something to do from dawn to dusk. Topics for the lunchtime topic tables are being finalised, keynote speakers are polishing their captivating presentations, and panellists are getting ready to challenge the audience.

There is now time to reflect on what you can achieve by attending this annual event. As a researcher, research user, policy advisor, or consumer, your contribution will add to the ‘wow’ factor of this conference.

With the theme Driving Change there is every possibility that this conference will have an impact on health in Australia in the future.

Listening, asking and answering questions, swapping stories, encouraging others will all have an impact on what happens at this conference. Being there will be an experience not to be missed.

Come and discover the ‘wow’ factor for yourself, see you at the Conference in July!
