The following are key general awards researchers (and others) can apply for, to both enhance their careers and build their track records.

NHMRC Fellowship awards

These awards provide support for experienced researchers to undertake research that is both of major importance in its field and of benefit to Australian health. The types of awards available include: Australia Fellowship, Research Fellowships, Trans-Tasman Joint Initiative Award and Practitioner Fellowships.

ARC Future Fellowships

This new initiative was developed to promote research in areas of critical national importance by giving 1000 outstanding researchers four-year fellowships to conduct their research in Australia.

Endeavour Awards

This Australian Government scholarship program provides opportunities for citizens of the Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Europe and the Americas to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. Awards are also available for Australians to do the same abroad. The following Awards are offered to Australians: Endeavour Research Fellowships, Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Research Fellowships, Endeavour Research Fellowships for Indigenous Australians, Endeavour Executive Awards.

Harkness Fellowships in Health Care Policy and Practice

The Commonwealth Fund provides opportunities for promising mid-career professionals from Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, to apply for a unique opportunity to spend up to 12 months in the United States as a Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and Practice. Fellows work with leading US experts to conduct a research study that addresses a critical issue on the health policy agenda in both the US and their home country.

Churchill Fellowship

This fellowship provides financial support to enable Australian citizens from all walks of life to travel overseas to undertake an analysis, study or investigation of a project or an issue that cannot be readily undertaken in Australia. Currently the average Fellowship cost is $25,000. There are no prescribed qualifications, academic or otherwise, for this award, merit is the primary test, whether based on past achievements or demonstrated ability for future achievement.

The General Sir John Monash Awards

These awards enable outstanding individuals to further their education and contacts overseas and so prepare them for their future leadership role. Award winners are assessed to be outstanding achievers and potential future leaders, who will make a significant contribution to Australia. Annually, up to eight Awards are awarded to outstanding Australians graduating from Australian Universities.
