Australian Institute for Primary Care (AIPC)

Jenny Macmillan, Australian Institute of Primary Care

The Australian Institute for Primary Care (AIPC) is located at La Trobe University’s Bundoora campus in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. Part of the Faculty of Health Sciences’ Division of Health Research, the AIPC’s goal is to make a significant, positive and enduring impact on the way health and community care is delivered and accessed. Research, consultancy and education are undertaken particularly in the areas of primary health and aged care. AIPC is self-funding, operates on a cost recovery business model, and includes the following specialist units:

The Centre for Health Systems Development specialises in the evaluation of, and research into, primary health care and public health programs and policies. The centre’s current work includes evaluating the Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal Health and the evaluation of the Queensland Connecting Healthcare in Communities Initiative

Lincoln Centre for Research on Ageing conducts research and development activities designed to address policy and improve the planning, delivery and evaluation of services for older Australians. Lincoln supports an active research program in areas such as community and residential aged care services, ageing and social policy, management of chronic illness, and community-based rehabilitation and service coordination for people with long-term care needs. Lincoln is also responsible for postgraduate programs offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences in the areas of Gerontology and Aged Care.

Quality Improvement and Community Services Accreditation (QICSA) provides accreditation reviews and quality improvement support to health and community services across Victoria, as well as project work related to accreditation practice within a quality improvement framework. QICSA works with a range of service types, including community health, alcohol and other drugs, divisions of general practice, psychiatric disability rehabilitation and support, bush nursing, accommodation and support, child youth and family, and housing services.

The Centre for Health Communication & Participation is a site for research and knowledge transfer for improving health communication and participation across all levels of the health sphere. It comprises: Cochrane Consumers and Communication Review Group; Effectiveness research; and the Health Knowledge Network

AIPC also manages the Australian Journal of Primary Health and convenes the Victorian and National Primary and Community Health Networks, whose members share information on primary health care and the important role it plays in the Australian health system.
