The Population Research and Outcome Studies (PROS) Unit, South Australian Department of Health, in collaboration with the South Australian Divisions of General Practice, is pleased to announce the release of The Health Status of People Living in the South Australian Divisions of General Practice report.
Data from the South Australian Monitoring and Surveillance System (SAMSS) continuously collects information about the prevalence of chronic conditions, risk and protective factors, and health service use among South Australians. For this report, 21,650 people of all ages were surveyed across the 14 Divisions of General Practice covering metropolitan and rural South Australia.
People living in the Adelaide Western General Practice Network were more likely to report going to a general practitioner in the past four weeks. Those living in the Adelaide Hills and Limestone Coast Divisions were less likely to report going to a general practitioner (Figure 1).
This report also demonstrates differences between the Divisions in overall health status, psychological wellbeing, arthritis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, as well as risk factors such as obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, nutrition and physical activity. Other issues, including how people feel about the neighbourhoods they live in, and whether they have been unable to work or carry out usual activities because of their health are also analysed in the report.
The data in this report will assist Divisions in planning and advocating for health issues specific to their communities. A previous report described the health of South Australians in the Divisions of General Practice using data collected in 2002-2003. Future analyses of the SAMSS data will continue to investigate changes and trends over time.
