How are Divisions moving ahead?

     Sara Howard, PHC RIS

The Report of the 2006-07 Annual Survey of Divisions of General Practice, Moving ahead is the thirteenth in the report series and provides a comprehensive summary of Division infrastructure, membership and activities. Its release in late October 2008 was much anticipated and the report details how 22 868 GPs, 7 493 practice nurses, 7 381 practice staff and more than 2 100 allied health professionals are advancing health service delivery through 7 361 practices across Australia. In particular, engagement with consumers, community and Indigenous Australians, workforce support, and prevention programs have been key contributors to progressing the quality of and access to primary health care.

More discrete sections of data from the report are used in a number of other PHC RIS resources. For example:

  • Fast Facts are information snapshots showing trends over time eg. practice nurse numbers
  • Division Key Characteristics such as practice and GP numbers are available in a concise spreadsheet
  • Benchmarking Tool compares Divisions with similar demographic characteristics (eg. proportion of population identified as Indigenous)
  • Mapping Tool visually represents which Divisions are doing the same programs, including type II diabetes prevention and management of mental health.
