Divisions and asthma performance indicators

Ann-Louise Hordacre & Libby Kalucy, PHC RIS

National performance indicators (NPIs) have been part of Division reporting under the National Quality and Performance System (NQPS) since 2005. Online reporting and display of Division 12 Month Reports for 2006-07 <www.phcris.org.au/dios/displayReport0607.php> has made analysis of the NPIs more streamlined.

In 2006-07, 55 Divisions (46%) reported engagement in asthma chronic disease management programs. Divisions collaborated with diverse organisations including other Divisions, GPs, hospitals, universities, the Asthma Foundation and the Australian Wheat Board and Grain Corp, with achievements such as continuing professional development, patient education and smoking cessation.

In 2006-07, 34 Divisions reported data from 191 GPs on the smoking status of asthma patients on practice register, recall or reminder systems. While 13% of these patients were known to be current smokers, the data were incomplete and smoking status was unknown for approximately half of these 18000 patients (see Figure 1). Comments by Divisions about these data show that obtaining adequate accurate data at practice, GP and patient level requires effort in terms of time, resources, technical and privacy solutions, cooperation and proof of benefit. However, as data are essential to showcase achievements, obtaining such data is a very important challenge for the Divisions Network.
