April 7 is World Health Day and also marks the 60th anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO). In celebration of this we would like to highlight a few of WHO's programmes and resources their website have on offer that contribute to ‘Health for all'.
Health Evidence Network
<http://www.euro.who.int/HEN>
Set up by WHO/Europe this program gives rapid access to independent and reliable health information and evidence. Ensuring public health and health care policy-makers have a trustworthy source of evidence on which to build health policy. This website provides easy access to policy question answers, in the form of evidence-based reports and information from a number of databases and documents.
Healthy Settings
<http://www.who.int/healthy_settings>
The goal of this programme is to maximise disease prevention via a ‘whole system' approach. This approach has roots in the WHO ‘Health for All' strategy and its key principles include community participation, partnership, empowerment and equity. The website is the primary source of information for:
- Definition of Healthy Settings
- Types of Healthy Settings
- Activities in the WHO regions
- Selected initiatives
- News and events
- Publications.
Ethics and health
<http://www.who.int/ethics>
This programme was created as an aid to persons, both inside and outside of WHO, seeking information about bioethics, including the ethical aspects of healthcare delivery and planning as well as the ethics of clinical care, research, and biotechnology. The website provides a global calendar of bioethics events, resources on research ethics, and information about a range of topics in ethics.
The Global Health Library
<http://www.who.int/ghl>
WHO's Global Health Library provides first step access to reliable health information in paper form, electronic form, and any other media to those who need it. Access to health information is an integral part of all health systems because it can improve people's health.
European health for all database (HFA-DB)
<http://www.euro.who.int/hfadb>
HFA-DB is a central database of independent, comparable and up-to-date basic health statistics from the 53 European WHO Member States. It is updated biannually and has been a key source of information on health in the European Region since it was launched by the WHO in the mid-1980s.
Another website that contributes to ‘Health for all' is the website of the Global Health Council.
Global Health Council
<http://www.globalhealth.org>
The Global Health Council is the world's largest alliance dedicated to improving health worldwide. Providing information on health-related web sites, publications and other media they work to ensure that all who strive for improvement and equity in global health have the information and resources they need to succeed and become stronger advocates for health.
