Editorial: Health for all or health for some?

     Ellen McIntyre, PHC RIS

Thirty years ago the International Conference on Primary Health Care meeting in Alma-Ata called for international action to develop and implement primary health care throughout the world. They expressed the need for urgent action by all governments, all health and development workers, and the world community to protect and promote the health of all the people of the world; health being “a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” <http://www.euro.who.int/AboutWHO/Policy/20010827_1>.

In June this year the primary health care research community in Australia will gather in Hobart at the GP & PHC Research Conference to reflect on what we have (and have not) done towards achieving the goal of Health for All. We will debate what still needs to be done to protect and promote the health of all the people of the world. And we will hear from many as to how their work is contributing to this goal.

The GP & PHC Research Conference is noted for its networking opportunities that have led to the development of much productive collaboration and exchanges of information. These opportunities will be further enhanced as we take on board recommendations arising from the Networking at Conferences project. Our keynote speakers will be stimulating us with their take on Health for All in 2008. We encourage you to join us as we work together to improve heath for all.

Give Health a Chance

Everybody's talking about
Globalism and localism,
Liberalism, conservatism,
Socialism and fascism,
Nationalism and endless rows of
other `-isms'; but

All we are saying is
Give HEALTH a chance;
All we are saying is
Give HEALTH a chance!

Everybody's talking about
Revolution, evolution,
Regulation, transformation,
Integration, separation,
Degradation, concentration,
Corporations; endless rows of
other `-ations'; but

All we are saying is
Give HEALTH a chance;
All we are saying is
Give HEALTH a chance!
