PHCRED Strategy: APHCRI update

     Frith Rayner, APHCRI

The Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute (APHCRI) welcomed Judith Smith as a Visiting Fellow in February.

Ms Smith is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Research at the Health Services Management Centre of Birmingham University. In 2007 she has taken up a Visiting Senior Research Fellowship at the Health Services Research Centre, Victoria University, New Zealand.

Judith shared her experience of the systematic review process with Stream Six workshop participants. She was positive about the APHCRI experience of the linkage and exchange model – especially the amount of engagement between researchers involved in the research program and with policy advisers. She was also supportive of the APHCRI model that encourages work with stakeholders to reflect on the early results of the research. Judith offered some comments on possible models for future workshops which are being considered.

During her few days in Canberra Judith also spent a great deal of time with Hub researchers and was able to give them advice and guidance about their work.

Dr Beverly Sibthorpe joined Judith as a Visiting Fellow for some of her time in Canberra. She and Judith gave a joint presentation on a paper they have submitted for publication which examines potential futures for the Divisions network in Australia, based on international examples of organised primary health care.

Also in February APHCRI announced Stream Seven of its work program, the Linkage and Exchange Travelling Fellowships. These will provide an opportunity for eligible applicants, who were actively associated with a Stream Four project, to share lessons learned in Australia and to facilitate policy exchange and collaboration internationally.
