Editorial: Optimising networking at conferences

Ellen McIntyre & Sheri Millar, PHC RIS

Networking with delegates and speakers at conferences can be very productive for a number of reasons - to get to know others working in the same area, to discuss current and future projects, and to establish potential collaborations. With the General Practice and Primary Health Care (GP & PHC) Research Conference almost upon us, it provides an opportunity to focus on how we can get the most out of such an event, particularly by networking.

PHC RIS have incorporated a number of events designed to optimise networking at the GP & PHC Research Conference and we encourage you to make the most of these. If you are a first time attendee at the conference, please indicate this when you register so that we can introduce you to a more experienced conference attendee who will introduce you to other delegates.

Our longer lunchtimes (90 minutes) and refreshment breaks (30 minutes) will ensure you have plenty of time to meet and talk with other delegates. We have organised several lunchtime meetings as well as topic tables to facilitate the conversations. Other networking sessions include breakfast meetings, our welcome reception, and the conference dinner. These activities are most enjoyable as well as productive.

We have built in plenty of time for discussion both in the plenary and concurrent sessions. To further enhance this, we ask that you make your questions short and thought provoking.

Posters are an integral component of any conference and are growing in both numbers and quality. Make a point of viewing the posters when authors are present so that you can ask questions about their work.

If you have any concerns about the conference, talk to the conference organisers. We are the people most likely to be able to do something about your concerns. If you have any suggestions we would also like to hear them.

We look forward to seeing you at the conference next month.
