Ellen McIntyre & Sheri Millar, PHC RIS
2006 GP & PHC Research Conference
5-7 July 2006
Perth Convention Exhibition Centre
This year's conference theme Optimising impact, generated an excellent three days for over 300 delegates including researchers, decision makers, policy makers, practitioners and consumers to listen, discuss, network and socialise at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Delegates were inspired and challenged by our international guest speakers, Professors Larry A. Green, a Senior Scholar in Residence at The Robert Graham Centre in Washington, DC (sponsored by APHCRI), Martin Roland, Director of National Primary Care Research and Development Centre (NPCRDC) and Professor of General Practice at Manchester University and Andre Knottnerus, Professor, Department of General Practice, Maastricht University, the Netherlands, who actively engaged with delegates throughout the conference.
Australian plenary speakers Jennie Roe, Acting Assistant Secretary, Primary Care Programs Branch, Department of Health and Ageing, Philip Davies, Deputy Secretary, Department of Health and Ageing, Ross Bailie, Professor, Menzies School of Health Research and Shauna Gaebler, Deputy CEO, Perth and Hills Division of General Practice, all presented their knowledge, experience and insight, generating much discussion both at these sessions and during the ensuing breaks.
The Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre was a hive of activity as the program was jam packed in order to cater for the six pre-conference workshops, 120 paper presentations and 51 poster displays, four plenary sessions, two breakfast sessions, many lunchtime meetings, three major social engagements, and countless impromptu meetings.
AAAGP and APHCRI played a prominent role in this year's conference with each holding their own plenary session, where APHCRI (in collaboration with the Menzies Centre for Health Policy) also hosted an informal gathering immediately before the traditional AAAGP dinner with guest speaker Professor Martin Roland.
The Welcome Reception on Tuesday evening proved to be the ideal ice breaker to kick off the conference. The PHC RIS Conference dinner dance was an outstanding event attended by nearly all delegates who thoroughly enjoyed themselves with good food, great wine, fantastic music and legendary dancing.
We would like to sincerely thank everyone who has been involved in this year's conference and for their contributions which have been instrumental in the success of this conference. Special thanks goes to the conference advisory and scientific committees, invited speakers, paper and poster presenters, session chairs, workshop facilitators, sponsors, exhibitors, registrants, Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre staff, Conference Logistics and PHC RIS. In addition, we would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to the Primary Care Division of DoHA, without whose generous financial contribution the conference would not be possible.
