Stephanie Philbrick - Public Relations/Project Officer, NICS
The National Institute of Clinical Studies (NICS) is Australia 's national agency for improving health care by helping close important gaps between best available evidence and current clinical practice.
NICS recently launched Where's The Evidence?, an easy-to-use resource that will assist general practitioners, practice nurses and practice managers in accessing reputable, free, evidence-based information online. It comprises two components: an at-a-glance, two-page guide, and a free website.
The two-page guide lists proven sources of reliable, free online information. The website gives helpful, plain-English tips on how to effectively search on-line resources. The site offers interactive functions and provides access to self-paced tutorials that are suitable for any level of IT skill, from beginner through to advanced. Users are also encouraged to share searching hints that they've found to be useful.
Both tools are dedicated to supporting practitioners in finding evidence that is relevant and current.
The two-page guide can be downloaded from http://www.nicsl.com.au/newsroom.aspx, and the website can be accessed at http://wherestheevidence.nicsl.com.au/
NICS is also preparing for the Using Evidence: Using Guidelines Symposium to be held in Melbourne from 19-20 October 2006. The Symposium will feature overseas and local experts who have successfully implemented clinical guidelines into practice.
Speakers will include Dr Brian Mittman of Veteran Affairs, USA (a founding editor of Implementation Science ) and Professor Susan Michie (Professor of Health Psychology, University College, London).
The symposium will provide opportunities to explore practical solutions for getting guidelines into day-to-day practice, and promises to be a valuable experience for health professionals and others interested in evidence-based practice.
Expressions of interest can be registered at the Symposium website: Web: http://www.usingevidence.com.au
