Optimising Impact: 2006 GP & PHC Research Conference

5-7 July 2006, Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre

The annual GP & PHC Research Conference is once again shaping up to be an exciting event. The 2½ day program will include keynote and plenary sessions with international and Australian guest speakers, concurrent paper presentations, poster displays and breakfast sessions, providing plenty of opportunities for delegates to network. Prizes will be awarded for the 'Best Poster' and AAAGP (Australian Association for Academic General Practice) 'Distinguished' papers and best first-time presenter.

To kick off the conference a smorgasbord of topics are being presented in the pre-conference workshops. The workshops on offer are:

  • How on earth can you measure the quality of what really matters in primary care? - Martin Roland
  • Indigenous Child Health Research (working title) - Colleen Hayward
  • Grant Writing for success - Felicity Flack
  • Contextualising de-contextualised evidence for use in Australia primary health care: APHCRI's approach in Stream Four - Larry Green & Nicholas Glasgow
  • Making Medical Journalism Healthier - Steve Trumble & Ray Moynihan
  • How to design the perfect randomised controlled trial - Marie Pirotta, Jane Gunn, Jon Emery

It is widely appreciated that primary health care is a multi-faceted discipline, and as such this scintillating line up of workshops is designed to engage, provoke and equip delegates in an interactive environment. Each workshop will focus on one of the above six areas with direct relation to the conference theme Optimising Impact. The pre-conference workshops will be held on the morning of Wednesday 5 July. Delegates are advised to register early as places will be limited.

The 2006 program is a collaboration between PHC RIS and both APHCRI (Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute) and AAAGP. The official conference opening will take place after lunch on Wednesday 5 July. Then in the first plenary session, delegates will hear from all three international keynote speakers, Professor Martin Roland from the UK, Professor Larry Green from the United States and Professor Andre Knottnerus from the Netherlands. Professor Martin Roland will begin with his presentation, then followed by responses from both Professor Andre Knottnerus and Professor Larry Green.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship by APHCRI we have the pleasure of Professor Larry Green's company and expertise. APHCRI will be facilitating a plenary on Thursday 6 July before lunch. AAAGP will also convene a plenary session prior to this on Thursday morning. In addition AAAGP will be hosting a dinner at the Old Swan Brewery on the Wednesday evening (with guest speaker Professor Martin Roland) and holding their research meeting on Thursday afternoon.

There will be ample opportunities for delegates to informally network, catch up and meet the keynote speakers, old colleagues and make new friends. There will be a welcome reception on the evening of Tuesday 4 July, morning and afternoon tea breaks, lengthy lunches and naturally the well-earned conference dinner dance (included with full registration) where you can kick up your heels.

We urge delegates to register early and take advantage of the 'early-bird' rate (closes May 16). We look forward to welcoming you personally to the 2006 GP & PHC Research Conference in Perth, 5-7 July.
