Primary Health Care Research, Evaluation and Development Strategy (PHCRED)

Providing support in the area of dissemination and knowledge-exchange

An important ongoing activity for PHC RIS is supporting the PHCRED strategy by collecting and synthesising strategic information about PHCRED Strategy activities, resources and achievements.

PHC RIS did this in many ways:

  • Provided a newsletter forum to showcase heads of departments and researchers, and for Research Capacity Building Initiative (RCBI) funded departments to describe their activities and achievements.
  • Promoted events, scholarships and job opportunities through eBulletin and the PHC RIS website.
  • Maintained current contact details of RCBI Directors, Coordinators and Managers on the PHC RIS website.
  • Developed ROAR to include details of RCBI projects and others such as scholarships funded by PHCRED.
  • PHC RIS staff presented papers or workshops at PHCRED forums and meetings in Perth, Adelaide and Hobart.
  • Libby and Ellen contributed to planning the program for the national PHCRED meeting in Adelaide in November, as well as attending, presenting several items, chairing breakout groups and summarising the program at the conclusion of the day.
  • PHC NHMRC grants (title, chief investigator's name and institution), scholarships and fellowships commencing in 2006 were published in the February issue of PHC RIS infonet .
  • Key documents of the PHCRED Strategy (eg. PHCRED Strategic plan, RCBI Strategic Plan, evaluation report) were uploaded onto the PHC RIS website.
  • PHCRED resources were sourced and added to the PHC RIS website for ease of access. These included UNSW Research Bites, JCU on-line introductory research modules and Flinders Uni SARnet Snapshots (http://www.phcris.org.au/phcred/resources.php).
  • The 2006 GP & PHC Research Conference provided an opportunity for 20 RDP researchers, 37 RCBI supported researchers and 16 APHCRI funded researchers to present their work in the concurrent paper sessions and the research posters. The PHCRED dinner organised at the beginning of the conference was deemed very useful by those attending.
  • The paper Building research capacity in Australian departments of general practice and rural health written in 2005 (in collaboration with Deborah Saltman, Vanessa Traynor, Jane Sims, Jeffrey Richards, Joanne Dollard) was accepted for publication in the Primary Health Care Research & Development Journal.
  • A draft PHCRED Communication Strategy developed in consultation with the Department was used as a discussion paper at the National PHCRED meeting in November 2006. Although no final decisions were made at the meeting, continuing discussions will inform activity in 2007.
