GP & PHC Research Conference

2005

The 2005 GP & PHC Research Conference - Getting research right for policy and practice was held on 26-28 July, at the Adelaide Convention Centre in South Australia. During the three-day conference program there were 105 paper presentations, 89 poster displays, three plenary sessions, seven pre-conference workshops, four breakfast sessions, 21 concurrent sessions, a 1½ hour poster session, social engagements, and countless impromptu meetings.

Conference Logistics which was again contracted to provide professional conference secretariat services, delivered excellent administrative and organisational support to the conference convenors.

The Call for Abstracts was fully automated through the website, and a pre-selected scientific committee of 18 general practice and primary health care research professionals used a blind peer review process to review the record number of abstract submissions (194) (n=174 in 2004).

The conference generated record numbers in attendance compared to previous years. Four-hundred and five delegates, from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA and the United Arab Emirates were inspired, challenged and provoked by our international guest speakers: Professor Jonathan Lomas, (Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Health Services Research Foundation), Professor Michael Quinn Patton (Union Institute and University Graduate School) and Australia's Kate Carnell (Chief Executive Officer, Australian Divisions of General Practice). PHC RIS also sponsored 11 delegates who otherwise would have been unable to attend.

2005 also marked the first year PHC RIS and AAAGP integrated their two conferences. AAAGP sponsored the inaugural Distinguished Paper Prize, convened a plenary session, hosted a conference dinner at the Adelaide Wine Centre, held a well attended AAAGP meeting and provided a display table.

The Best Poster Prize was awarded to two posters, Sonia Champion, Brenda Carter, and Les Taylor for their poster Aboriginal people promoting wellbeing within their own community of Whyalla through participatory action research and Pauline Zanet, Judy Taylor, and Jane Edwards for their poster Strengthening community participation in rural communities .

Posters were judged by a panel of 16 judges, based on their: compliance to conference poster size guidelines; visual impact and design; content and clarity of message; credits (organisation, contact details, etc). The winners were chosen for the innovative way the posters conveyed the author's research and enquiry.

As a result of their representation on GP & PHC Research Conference advisory committee and scientific committee, APHCRI planned and chaired a plenary session and provided funding for keynote speaker Jonathan Lomas, who also facilitated a pre-conference workshop for policy advisors.

What others say:
"I am new in this area of work; the conference is an excellent forum for information gathering." (Researcher, Stakeholder survey 2005)
"I have been to every GP & PHC Research Conference (since 1995) bar one, and each year I come away feeling excited, enthused and privileged to be part of this community of PHC researchers, practitioners, consumers and policy makers. I would like to thank the Conference Organisers for pulling off such an amazing feat and continually raising the bar each year." (Conference delegate, 2005)
