Results of the 2005-06 Annual Survey of Divisions (ASD)

The Primary Health Care Research and Information Service (PHC RIS) conducts the Annual Survey of Divisions (ASD) on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. As part of their contractual obligations, all Divisions of General Practice are required to complete the Survey which includes questions about their membership, activities (including population health) and infrastructure for the previous financial year. Consequently, the results provide a comprehensive overview of Divisions and summarise the broad range of activities that they are involved in.

Feedback to Divisions

Once Divisions submit the ASD, PHC RIS collates, checks and analyses these data. Upon completion of this process, each Division is provided with a confidential report summarising their responses. Divisions were sent a copy of their 2005-06 summary report on January 17, 2007.

Divisions were invited to check their report and inform PHC RIS of any data errors or anomalies. For the 2005-06 data, approximately 20% of Divisions advised us of changes; a final updated report was then sent to respective Division's CEOs and Boards on February 1, 2007.

The summary report also contains benchmarking data so that individual Divisions can evaluate their responses relative to their

  • State
  • Rural Remote Metro Area (RRMA) category
  • Population categories (including population in Division, per GP FWE, and proportion recorded as Indigenous).

Moving the Word to Web

Up to 2004-05, the ASD has been conducted using a Microsoft Word document. In response to difficulties in completion and administration of the Word-based survey, PHC RIS has invested considerable effort into converting the Word version of the survey to an on-line version in time for the 2005-06 ASD. The following provides a brief overview of some of the key issues identified when using Word to complete the ASD and how these are overcome by using an on-line web based version for the Survey.
