As in other years we anticipate a high standard of scientific papers from the membership. We are keen to encourage more papers on educational research and will introduce participant defined panels. Panels comprise grouped set of abstracts to form a panel of related presentations. The aim is to provide an opportunity for those with a particular interest to ensure a coherent set of papers for presentation in a single oral parallel session, with a chair's presentation to introduce and summarise the session, and with some flexibility over how the time is organised. There will also be workshops and special interest group sessions where the key methodological issues facing our academic discipline will be presented and discussed, and as in previous years, we shall be awarding the prize for the Best Research Paper of the Year.

With the NHHRC’s final report due to be released mid 2009, the time has never been more crucial to discuss the accessibility and affordability of primary healthcare within Australia. The report marks a pivotal movement in the government’s strategy to strengthen the national healthcare system but who will govern the GP super clinics and how will these clinics be funded?
The main emphasis is on redesigning the health care system by moving towards a model of preventative care and extending the roles for nursing and allied health professionals but does the GP Super Clinics model undermine existing general practices?
Will the clinics improve the provisions of services or fragment and destabilise existing health care services?
Informa’s Inaugural GP Super Clinics conference will explore answers to these questions as you spend a solid two days of learning and networking with industry experts.

The recent incidents of natural disaster in Victoria (bushfires) and Queensland (floods, cyclones, oil spills) have left a trail of death and destruction, shattered communities, and displaced people. Such events severely impact on the Mental Health of individual survivors, and impact on community functioning.
What lessons can be learned from our response to these events? How can Mental Health professionals prepare themselves more effectively to deal with such events in rural and remote communities? How can the resources of Government, mental health professionals, emergency services, and private practitioners be better utilised for optimal benefit?
What long term planning is required to provide ongoing support, treatment and infrastructure?

The first conference was held in Sydney in 1999 and much has happened in the years between. The first Conference came about to provide a forum for researchers who wanted to meet as health services researchers and to promote the dialogue between research and policy. The Association was established following that first Conference, and the Conferences have been continued and are held every two years. But wait, there's more! HSRAANZ is providing more activities to support its members - through early career workshops, special seminars, and its corporate member forums. The Executive is also working behind the scenes to promote health services research to research funding agencies and to policymakers. Now that HSRAANZ is sufficiently established, it has been able to employ a part-time Executive Officer and thus engage in a wider range of activities. As the focus on health services research and policy grows on both sides of the Tasman, there is no better time to join if you are not already a member.
