The Close the Gap Campaign:
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people still die 10-17 years younger than other Australians. But by working together we can Close the Gap within a generation. The Close the Gap campaign, formed by over 40 peak Indigenous organisations in 2006 has come a long way. The Federal Government and Opposition and those in most states have signed the Close the Gap Statement of Intent, committing them to take action in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health organisations. Over 160,000 Australians and many thousands of organisations from councils to corporations have supported the campaign.

Although Australia has traditionally been perceived as a leader in minimising the harms related to alcohol and other drug use, Victoria still has much to do in keeping pace with its stately rivals.
‘What’s the harm?’ will showcase innovative and successful strategies to minimise the harms related to injecting drug use and inspire attendees to explore, discuss and debate what holds Victoria back in drug policy, attitudes and action.

This conference will provide a forum to share research, experience and practice in order to discuss how we can effectively sustain and enhance the lives of adolescents and adults with FASD, their families, service providers, and communities. Are we adequately addressing and supporting the needs and rights of adolescents and adults with FASD within our society? Do individuals with FASD have timely and appropriate access to health care, housing, social services, legal and civil justice and employment? How can we build on the strengths of existing systems to identify and address barriers and move forward to provide effective ethical support? How do we provide focused and targeted approaches across services, and systems to create an integrated and collaborative approach to supporting individuals with FASD? These are the essential elements for social justice and we are just starting to explore and understand what will be required to put these into action.

This forum is a key event for those wishing to keep their fingers on the pulse of the global health frontlines. Once again a consultative process involving hundreds of previous participants and partners has generated the theme for GHF 2012: a focus on chronic conditions.
The fourth edition of the Geneva Health Forum (GHF) will focus on chronic conditions which pose major challenges to health systems in high and low-income countries, in stable and emergency situations. To address this challenge the GHF solicits accounts from those on the frontlines, whether they are working at the local level in a rural clinic, at the national level in a ministry or developing policy at the international level.

Communities throughout Australia are increasingly concerned about the problems posed by excessive alcohol and drug fuelled violence. Efforts at the national level to tackle our excessive alcohol consumption have been limited and poorly coordinated. Building our effectiveness to advocate for better public policy from local, state and federal governments is increasingly seen as important for communities to 'take back the streets' and turn around the level of alcohol and drug-fuelled violence. David Templeman (ADCA), Paul Dillon (DARTA), Chris Raine (Young Aust. of the Year, Qld), Mark Daglish (Addiction Psychiatrist) included in the line up for the day.

The focus on health issues experienced by Asian and other Ethnic Minority communities in New Zealand related to migration and the social environment were chosen for various reasons: migration of these groups to New Zealand has increased considerably over the last two decades; these populations are growing rapidly, and their health needs are growing equally. The impacts of social determinants on health and wellbeing are a concern, not only for ethnic minority populations in New Zealand, but in all host countries receiving ethnically different immigrants. We would like to address these issues comprehensively and thereby broaden our collective knowledge in this field.

The 13th International Mental Health Conference will focus on the complex mental issues affecting the elderly including depression, dementia, delirium, paranoid disorders and anxiety. It will also explore the mental health issues of young Australians (aged 18 – 24 years) struggling with schizophrenia, depression, suicidal thoughts, bipolar, anxiety disorders and drug use and drug induced psychosis. With 7% of Australian children and adolescents (aged 0 – 17 years) experiencing mental health problems and only one in four receiving professional health care, a positive change is long overdue.

The theme this year is “From Little Things Big Things Grow”. Taken from a Paul Kelly song, it encompasses all the work that Community Health Nurses do in the community. The song describes the stand and eight year wait and struggle of the Gurindji Aboriginal people for land rights and better conditions, a people marginalised in society, politics, health and education, not dissimilar to many of our clients. Today we provide services for families and children from birth until adulthood and recognise the crucial impact that early interventions can have profound outcomes for individuals and communities later in life.

Congress 2012 replaces the four annual conferences usually conducted individually by the organisations in 2012. The historic cooperation of these organisations has created an environment for a very large gathering of population health professionals, and will provide the opportunity for working across and within organisations on key population health issues, as well as unparalleled opportunities for networking. It provides a significant opportunity to access, at the one time, more than 1200 national and international delegates from across the population health continuum, with most delegates drawn from the Asia Pacific region, especiallyAustralia and New Zealand, and employed in not-for-profit and/or community organisations, local, state and federal government, universities, research institutions, hospitals, health care services and other health bodies.
