The biennial SARRAH conference is the peak opportunity for rural and remote allied health and oral health professionals to come together and present, discuss, debate and summarise elements of our professional lives that bind us together.
The conference theme – “Many Paddocks, One Herd – We are all Outstanding in our Fields” suggests that although allied health and oral health professionals work in varied locations, geographies or environments, we are one team. We come from many different disciplines to form a “herd” of health professionals.

Because of the general ageing of the Australian population, the retirement village sector of the housing industry is experiencing strong growth and is expected to continue to grow for some time. The development of a large retirement village in a community, and especially a small community, can have significant effects on that community and their health and community services. Although it will provide benefits in terms of accommodation for local seniors, it will have important impacts on hospitals, community health services, home-based services, transport, libraries, etc. New residents might face social and mental health issues as they leave social and family connections for a very different lifestyle in a new place. Many primary care agencies have a direct interest in the planning of this type of housing and it is important to have input to that planning at the outset, rather than deal with any health, community or social issues that might arise when the development is completed. Retirement villages are often substantial contributors to the urban form and dynamics and will be part of their local community for a long time. Their development represents important opportunities to build environments that promote health and well-being. In conjunction with the Department of Planning and Community Development, the Lower Hume Primary Care Partnership will conduct an important one day conference on 29 August 2008 at the Darebin Arts and Cultural Centre aimed at bringing municipal council statutory and strategic planners together with social and community planners and retirement village developers to draft a best practice planning protocol for these developments. The conference will be attended by the Hon Richard Wynne, Minister for Housing and Minister for Local Government, and the Hon Justin Madden, Minister for Planning. This issue is an effective one for primary care providers to bring a wide range of interests to the table and give leadership in a significant health context.

The conference will take a fresh look at the changing role of consumers and providers in healthcare and the systems that support them. This evolution, fueled by advances in the acquisition, communication and application of information, has brought us to a point where many agree that the next great advance in healthcare will come from the assisted use of existing knowledge and the empowerment of the consumer with this knowledge.
