
André Knottnerus is Professor of General Practice, University of Maastricht, and President of the Health Council of the Netherlands, The Hague, The Netherlands.
André Knottnerus (1951) obtained his MD degree and specialisation as a general practitioner at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He worked as a general practitioner in Amsterdam, with a part-time appointment at the department of general practice of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam until 1982, when he started epidemiology training at the University of Maastricht.
In 1986 he delivered his PhD thesis on the development and application of clinical epidemiological methods in diagnostic research. In 1990-1991 he was dean of the Medical Faculty in Maastricht, and from 1994 he was scientific director of the research institute ExTra (until 2000) and the Netherlands School of Primary Care Research (CaRe, postgraduate research school acknowledged by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences) (until 2002). His special research interest is focused on clinical epidemiological research, especially in primary care.
From 1999 he was editor of the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, until 2001 together with the late Dr Alvan R Feinstein, and currently with Dr Peter Tugwell (Ottawa). In 2001 he was appointed as president of the Health Council of the Netherlands (of which he was vice-president from 1996 until 2001). In 2004 he was appointed as a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW).
André Knottnerus coached 53 research students towards their PhD degree, and is currently coaching 15 PhD students. He (co)authored more than 235 international scientific articles in various fields, several books, and many articles in national (Dutch language) journals.
